The July Issue of Vogue sparked alot of controversy when they decided to have an all ‘Black Issue’. The Magazine features nothing but black models. For the first time in the popular magazine’s 101 year history, the magazine has completely sold out, causing a reprint of 40, 000 more copies. In New York a local newstand sold 400 copies in less than an hour, and people are on waiting lists just to get a copy. The magazine’s price value has even soared. In what started out at $16 dollars on newstands, the magazine is now going for $50 because it is now being called a collectors item. Vogue’s Editor-In-Chief Franca Sozzani did’nt care if anyone bought the magazine, she just wanted black models to be recognized:
“Maybe in our country it is not the best idea. But I don’t care. I think it is not my problem if they don’t like it — it’s their problem.”
“I thought we needed to break away from this type of thing,” she said. “There are so many beautiful black women not being used.”
This is truly a slap in the face to all who doubted. This finally proves that black women are a force to be reckoned with not only in the fashion world but in every day life as well. So for those of you who think “black dont sell”….THINK AGAIN.
