Teen pop trio The Jonas Brothers say they took no offense to host Russell Brand’s teasing at the 2008 MTV Video Music Awards on Sept. 7.
Brand, a comedian who starred in the film Forgetting Sarah Marshall, mocked the band over the purity rings they wear to symbolize their intent to remain virgins until they marry.
“It’s cool to see that he recognizes we are gentleman,” says Nick, 15. “I think he did a good job. We saw him on Conan O’Brien and thought he was hilarious.”
The brothers insist the teasing didn’t ruin their fun at the VMAs. “We had a lot of friends there and everybody’s so nice,” says Kevin, 20. We had a good time.”
But other celebrities reacted negatively to Brand’s comments about the Jonas Brothers. American Idol winner Jordin Sparks defends the band, saying, “It’s not bad to wear a promise ring, because not everybody — guy or girl — wants to be a slut.”
Even celebutard Paris Hilton got into the mix. “I don’t pick on them,” says the former sex tape star. “That’s something cool for a kid to keep, so don’t pick on them for that.”
Meanwhile, the Jonas Brothers aren’t the only teen idols who have pledged to remain virgins until they marry. Nick’s girlfriend, Selena Gomez, 16, wears a promise ring her dad gave her years ago. And Nick’s former flame, Miley Cyrus, 15, also claims she intends to save herself for marriage.
The Jonas Brothers performed their song Lovebug at the VMAs and finally got their wish to meet pop princess Britney Spears. The brothers were up against Spears and Chris Brown for the Video of the Year award, which Spears won for her song, Piece of Me. Britney also won two other VMAs, including Best Female Video and Best Pop Video for Piece of Me.
